You’ll need a place to rest your weary head while traveling. Like airfare, accommodations will take a good chunk out of your budget so it’s essential to plan ahead as much as possible. Especially when you’re traveling with kids. The last thing we wanted to do was arrive in a new city and have to search for a place to stay when we are tired and hungry.
The sites below are good resources for finding competitive rates on where to stay.
Agoda focuses mainly on Southeast Asia, which was helpful for us when planning our backpacking trip. Because we were traveling long term, we had a strict nightly budget. We often found deals on Agoda that brought nightly rates within that budget.
I found their filtering tools helpful when narrowing down which neighborhoods to stay in, what type of room style we needed, and what amenities were provided. For instance, since we were co-sleeping with a toddler, we needed a room with a queen or king size bed. At the time we traveled, our son was too little for his own twin bed and full sized beds were not big enough for all three of us. Using the filtering tools, I was able to look at properties in our desired neighborhood with the exact specifics we preferred.
It’s no secret we love Airbnb as we’ve mentioned it in previous posts. We’ve stayed at the most interesting spaces all over North America, and now Southeast Asia through Airbnb. Staying in local places rather than hotels gives you the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture of the city you’re visiting. For instance, in Siem Reap, we befriended our host over Khmer beef BBQ and beer. We learned about being an ex-pat in Cambodia while our children played together in the communal area. This unique experience made our trip to Siem Reap more meaningful for our entire family.
Ben also likes to use the kitchens to try out new recipes of the regional foods we eat on the road. We learned the hard way though, that not all kitchens are created equal. Using the filtering tools for Airbnb will help narrow down the exact type of property you’re looking for. Within walking distance of the beach? Check. Full kitchen? Check. Air conditioning? Check.
We used the Airbnb app while on the road to book places and communicate with our hosts.

TurnKey Vacation Rentals operates similarly to Airbnb and focuses solely on the US market. TurnKey offers one of a kind vacation rentals that operate as fine hotels in popular US destinations. This is a good choice for travelers who like the unique experiences Airbnb offers, but appreciate the finer service and amenities found in high-end hotels.
TurnKey uses top of the line technology for all aspects of the customer experience, from their reservation system to scheduling cleaning after checkout, they are truly ahead of the game when it comes to the accommodation industry. Founders John Banczak and T.J. Clark say it best: “Things like secure entry for each new guest, scheduling cleaning and repairs, making sure housekeeping was done well each time, monitoring noise levels… could all be handled via existing technology that was already improving lives in other industries.”
